I've had this same problem  for over a year now...

There is a "FIX" from MicroSoft...

support dot microsoft dot com/kb/969395/

Symptom: You install more than 100 video transitions or video effects to be used by Windows Movie Maker on a computer that is running Windows XP. When you try to run Windows Movie Maker, the application crashes. This problem occurs because the maximum number of video transitions or video effects that Windows Movie Maker can handle is set to 100. This results in a crash in the qedit.dll module of Windows Movie Maker.

Prerequisites:
You must have Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement:
You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix if the qedit.dll module is in use.

Hotfix replacement information:
This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information:
The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

File name File version File size Date Time Platform
Qedit.dll 6.5.2600 .5783 562,176 24-Mar-2009 19:07 x86
