well i got my boot.ini stored in C:\
You can try copy &pasting my boot.ini log but I warn you I am not held for responsibility of any damage!

Create a .txt file open it
copy&paste this in the .txt
Code: [ Download ] [ Select ]
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
  1. [boot loader]
  2. timeout=30
  3. default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
  4. [operating systems]
  5. multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

then save and close it rename the file to boot.ini place the boot.ini in "C:\" directory
I believe people had to right click it and go to properties to make it hidden what seems to appear on my computer.

I'd remove this part of the boot.ini file to make it more generic for XP: /noexecute=optin
The rest is just telling it to use the first partition of the master on the 1st IDE chain. Basically the "C" drive.

What operating system are you trying to reinstall? Reguardless of the operating system you will be ablet to format your drive and install from DOS mode, though XP makes it easier because the cd is bootable, otherwise you need a bootup floppy disk. I'm assuming your trying to install after you've booted up your operating system. If your unable to install from DOS(after your formated your disc) it's either a CD error (as in scratched disc or corrupt files) or other hardware errors, which isn't too likly, however somtimes bad RAM or icompatible RAM type causes errors to occure during installation.

Do you recieve a error message? If so what is it? At what point in the boot process does it fail? Can you get into Safe Mode? http://tinyurl.com/pfca

Did it load up windows at all after installation?
Can you access the boot menu as in the instructions above and see how long after you select your operating system that it stops loading?
