Windows XP Home Edition won't start up due to "/windows/system32/config/system file is missing or corrupt." I tried rebooting by selecting "Start Windows Normally" and "Last Known Good Configuration" but no luck. I did an upgrade from ME a few years ago, everything was fine until a few weeks ago. I did a hard shut down and the next time I rebooted that was the error I got. I'm not able to get beyond this screen no matter what. the other problem is I don't have the xp upgrade cd, I do have the code. I also have another cd for xp home full edition that I bought for my laptop. Can I use that disk to repair it using the code from the upgrade? Also, if I have to do a clean install, is there a way for me to get my data off prior. Any help would be appreciated
