A few weeks ago I recieved a laptop as a present, a Compaq Presario C763TU, which has Windows Vista Basic preinstalled. Like many people, I want my XP Pro back ... Vista isn't for me. I've looked around the web quite a bit and found a few things, but with all these problems I've read about people having I thought I'd get some proper instruction before attempting such an operation, as I really don't trust myself to do it right. I have the Windows XP Pro disc which I had used on my old laptop. How do I go about doing this?

It should be a fairly straight forward operation but I have never done it, I am one of the few people that haven't had any issues with Vista.

Set you laptop to boot from CD in the BIOS.
Insert the XP disc and reboot the laptop.
You should get a prompt to press any key to boot the CD.
The Windows install routine should begin.
If it works as it should, you should be alerted that a version of Windows already exists.
You should then have the option to delete the partition and format.
Do that and then recreate your partitions and continue with the install.

Hopefully I am not way off base but that is how I would tackle this.
