It's probably been mentioned, but it is useful to note that the anchor text of a link (or the "title" atribute perhaps as well) can actually make a site go to #1 position for search terms without the #1 site actually having those terms in it (though it helps I suppose).

One might even propose that the effective pagerank for a page in a given search is calculated from the number of backlinks to it that use the anchor text related to that search, i.e: Jokes will influence jokesite's pagerank in a search containing the word "jokes".

Note that this technique is used in "google bombs" such as when you search for "miserable failure" you get Bush's biography, even though the term I'm sure doesn't appear anywhere in that site or in its keywords.

So if you are getting backlinks, make sure they use link text/titles that contain the terms you want to appear in a search for! It could make the difference between showing up in that search or not, reguardless of your overall PR.

Google has gotten wise to the identical nature of links in a bomb so try to mix them up so that you don't inadvertantely look like a bomb but still make good use of the anchor text...ie for "Jokes"...other good variations would be "Today's Joke", "Joke of the Day", "Funny Jokes"

I think I read the threshold is assumed to be around 90%...this is also design to taget sites that buy links, since they tend to be scripted and all look the same.

It's also worth noting that links with good anchor text should come from sites related to that anchor text.

It helps to have mixed anchor text and the odd bit of linked images with alt tags.

Yeah on theme links with anchor text definitely works.

Try the phrase "Domain Articles" my site is #1 due to the above reasons.
