Yes 300,000 non-dodgy backlinks will help 'just a bit'. :) By non-dodgy I mean not FFA (Free For All) and the like.

You would still need specific anchor text linking to the site and appropriate page titles to rank for a specific keyphrase though.

Backlinks from unique relevant domains using different anchor text are your best bet.

IMHO Google and MSN both search engine gives backlink high importance. And when it comes from different domains with good rank and unique content its value increases all the more.

And mind it 300,000 backlinks would mean Rank#1 for that anchor text keyword. I am very sure on that.

Backlinks do help a lot.

The above statement is based on my observation :)

Vijay

If just applying to PR alone, backlinks will boost your PR

Yes 300,000 links will give you page rank. You may even rank well for keywords found in your links ... even if your on-page SEO is lousy.

The concept is known as "Google bombing".

Two things to remember

1. On page factors have NO EFFECT on page rank.

2. Link text is treated as if it appears on the linked page, even if it is NOT PRESENT ON THE PAGE.

Something else I just found, someone posted a link in a blog that will use a Google search phrase to list your site in the resluts. Just tested it a bit and it seems to work. Though I don't imagine the crawlers will like it. But at least it will create some popularity for a search phrase, even if it is vague. try this link and see what I mean.

'Hotels in Mallorca' as the link text

Any comments?

if you send too many posts at one time, people will think it as spam and tend to ignore it totally = worse

I'm sure I chatted to you before about a link exchange, am I wrong? Don't you have a travel related site too?
