Well, that all depends... If you want a forum to become a primary members area & bases for your site, it Takes Time to build (Dedication - Determination - Discipline). Most forums are Not successful to the level of the handful you may find like Ozzu, Digital Point, Webmaster-talk, V7N, WebDevforums, Etc...

Now, if you are simply looking at a Forum as a Customer service application & Retention aid, then Ya, Thats a GREAT idea (With Minimal marketing effort required apart from your Main site)

I have a forum myself, Simply for Customer Service though.

Good luck to you...

Depends on what it is. In most cases it doesn't hurt your site to have a forum.

It really benefits to have a forum if it's for a hosting service or for any other service that requires any type of support. It also can be used just as a discussion board. Anyway, that's what a forum is, but what I mean by that is to use it for discussing everyday things and just for conversation. That would only work if it's for some personal use... like for your blog or maybe profile like myspace... they have a discussion system that works like a forum.

In addition, forums like Ozzu, v7n, webmaster talk and many more that discussions are important because of informations a member shares and get! Cheers to forums!

If there are lots of visitors then put up a forum and let your visitors interact.

Before they interact, what is the purpose of the forum you will make? The purpose and reason why you created the forums is what you must think first.
