I found this on a page doing very well on Google:

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="index,follow">
<META NAME="REVISIT-AFTER" CONTENT="4 days">

Do any spiders actually respond to this? Or is this just smoke and mirrors?

I think it's OK to use this meta tag, as long as you keep the revisit-after parameter accurate (i.e. If your site gets updated once a month, entering 4 days for the value would be a bad idea.)

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="index,follow">
is correct and needed if you want your page to get indexed.

The revisit tag is ignored by the Google bot. It will come back to your page when fresh content is posted.

In my opinion this is not quite correct.

Google will still probably index your page if you leave out the first tag. (Unless your blocking them with robots.txt)

Secondly, gothman might be right about the second tag being ignored, but he's wrong about the fact that it will wait for fresh content before it comes back. It can't possibly know if a update has occurred without sending a GET request with If-Modified-Since in the header (which only works with static pages), therefore it would have to parse the body content page to check a dynamic page has changed (unless your dynamic pages spoof the header values).

The following tag is saying the spider to come every 4 days!
That's too long. Google comes everyday.

<META NAME="REVISIT-AFTER" CONTENT="4 days">
