Our site is up for about 3 months now and within 15 days we were listed high in MSN for our keywords but not for Google. Anything special to be done for Google? We have done the usual OnPage Optimization and have several backlinks. Thanks in advance.

You have to submit your site with high Page rank and valued backlinks. Bcoz it is very important for your site where you are submitting. So choose wisely directory or Search engines.

Your site must have quality and unique content ...quality backlinks with higher PR and much more ...so that the google should get attracted towards your website and have an eye on it.

till the results some by google try on getting good backlinks and work on promoting your website globally.

Here is another thing to consider: submitting a reinclusion request with Google. I had my site up over 4 months and Google would crawl, crawl, crawl, but no indexing. My site had PR and backlinks, tried everything. Had sitemaps, robots.txt, everything in place. I finally decided to submit a reinclusion request in case the people who owned the domain before me were banned by google. Sure enough, it was. 2 days after my reinclusion request, I was indexed!

Ok for a total newbie here with some really dumb questions

1) Is it a good idea to create a Google Sitemap?
2) What about getting your site verified (I can't get it to work)
3) Is it a good idea to get your site indexed?
4) What is PR
5) Same for Backlinks? Huh?
6) How do you get a sitemap?
7) What are robots.txt?

Probably have more but I am like totally baffled.

Please in easy to explain terms if you don't mind

1) Is it a good idea to create a Google Sitemap?

Why not please the master.. it certainly isn't a bad idea if they are offering it.

2) What about getting your site verified (I can't get it to work)

if you mean checking the code to make sure the page works go here.. http://validator.w3.org/

3) Is it a good idea to get your site indexed?

If you want people to see it yes.

4) What is PR
Google gives each page a rough score from 0-10/10.... this rank updates quarterly i believe at the moment.. supposedly the more important your page is.. the higher the rank

5) Same for Backlinks? Huh?
Backlinks... other websites that point to your page.. if your domain name is found within the code of another website and is clickable.. its a backlink to your site.

6) How do you get a sitemap?
type google sitemap into google..

7) What are robots.txt?
a quote from page 1 google definition

a file used to exclude some or all robots from crawling some or all the files or directories on a website. This file should be placed in your website's root directory.

Google is the search engine that likes gradual and steady growth in the number of links and the content and puts not that much emphasis on onpage factors.

Puneet

Thank you ever so much for the compliment

As for #2 question I am sorry but I guess I should have been alot more explicit in my question

Here is what I am trying to do OK

From the verification page, you can choose the verification method that works best for you.

Add a meta tag - We will ask you to add a META tag with a unique value to your site's home page.
Upload an HTML file - We will ask you to create a file with a specific name and upload it to a specific directory.

Which is better meta tag or html file?

This site is located in a subdirectory. If you verify this site, you can see crawl errors for this subdirectory and any subdirectories below it. If you have ownership of the root domain (http://members.shaw.ca/), add it to your account and verify it. This will allow you to see the full range of stats and errors available.

Create the HTML verification file specified below and upload it to http://members.shaw.ca/oursuccess/. [?]

google5ff2f5a0ebd411f4.html

1. I've created a file named google5ff2f5a0ebd411f4.html.
2. I've uploaded the file to http://members.shaw.ca/oursuccess/ and can view http://members.shaw.ca/oursuccess/googl ... 411f4.html in my browser.

Darn thing just won't take I can't get it to upload no matter how many times I try. Oh yes I I tried with ftp and Ok I admit it ( ) I even tired with Frontpage2000 (don't hate me for it OK)

Here is the info for the meta tag which I can't to upload either

Copy the META tag listed below and paste it in your site's home page in the first <HEAD> section of the page, before the first <BODY> section. [?] Show me an example <META name="verify-v1" content="5JwXEY/jFskN4KAC4ZjQsCckhzg1jM7edopdyb7dkaU=" />
I've added the META tag in the home page of http://members.shaw.ca/oursuccess/.

Any suggestions Oh wise ones

backlinks are important, but Google likes quality better than quantity.

You are right Google gives preference to only quality. Moreover there's a concept of google sandbox for the new sites.
