About a week and a half ago, there was the start of discussion around Google's brand push in the algorithm. Some people started noticing that for some queries (mostly generic queries), more "big brands" were showing up in the search results.

yep, Google confirms that there are changes in ranking. However, matt cutts says that they are not thinking particularly on brands.

I watched the video and while he really doesn't go into specifics about what exactly changed, he said that the change people are talking about is one of over three or four hundred of changes that they do every year. He says that Google doesn't really think about brands, but more about trust, authority, reputation, page rank, and high quality. He says that he wouldn't call this change an update, but more of a small change which they refer to as Vince's Change, as that was the guy within Google that came up with it. He also said that most people aren't even aware of this change.

I don't really see this as cause for concern. Top level brands are, in theory, quite relevant in terms of returns.

Yes friend they are penalizing link trade. Apart from automatically identifying sites involving in buying and selling links for PR purpose they are now created a form where anyone can complain about such sites.

I was really worried as well but have not seen much change in my rankings. I was also told that seo's would not be needed anymore but links still count so I suppose if you have a quality site they would be relevant.
I have known that one of my competitors that is the top one in my industry was ranking much lower than me on many key terms. He is now above me and I think the new system is the reason.

They did some changes but still relevancy is the first to consider. Talking to. PR, Authority and trusted site. It's not with branding..
