Something I noticed on my google toolbar...

go to options-more (tab)
under under "web buttons" there is an option to enable voting buttons.
Im unsure what it does but it sends something to google whenever you vote good or bad for a website...

anyone have some more insight onto this?

I think it's another way of letting Google basically find pages. If there's a new site up that nobody's linking to, but it has good (or bad) content, it can learn of their existence. I don't know if it has any specific bearing on how high Google rates your site (but I don't know, it might)..

I've never found any real documentation abou it either, but I figure like I said above. If nothing else, Google could be using it simply as another method to find URLs it doesn't know about yet.

The feature is pretty new, it came with the new google toolbar about two months ago (~November maybe?).

I would think that if enough people click on the symbols for a single site to make it statistically significant (i.e., >10000 different IP addresses voting), then why not take those results into account to modify the search result?

Actually clifffrog I believe it has at least been around since the beginning of last year. Ever since I have had the Google Toolbar installed I have seen i there in the options, and it has been over a year since I really started getting heavy into Google. I think they are still testing with it, or realizing that it probably won't work due to the abuse and cheating that would happen.

Quote:
Voting buttons: If you especially like or dislike a web page you're visiting and want to share your opinion with Google, you can vote thumbs up by clicking the happy face or thumbs down by clicking the unhappy face. These buttons can also be used to report especially useful or unsatisfactory results after searching with Google. Just click the appropriate button while you're still on the results page. This feature is currently in test mode, so you will not notice any immediate effects based on your action, other than experiencing a warm sense of satisfaction from having shared your feelings with people who really do care.

I read in some totally unauthoritative article, heh, that some search engines want to rank pages based on the traffic or click thrus. Maybe this is one of Goolge's tests in that area?

I think tracking websites by each user allows incorrectly ranked sites to get flagged but this could inevitably start a voting war between some competitors. If it’s accurate the voting system could create better results.

Yeah, I have used this for awhile. I never knew if it had any positive influence on a site, but I can dream! I usually click it on new client's sites, hoping the Google Genie will come and index where i vote.

I think it's most likely used as a statistical tool for measuring performance. Imagine typing in a popular search term, and then seeing what the votes are like for your top 10 results. If the 1st few sites have better ratings than your lower ranked sites, then it could mean that google is ranking search results well.

I feel that somehow Google do undertake votes from Toolbar into account during updating the PR/IBL.

No evidence... just a guess :)

Hi,

Google collects this information for everypage and every website, and it determines the quality and PR based on this in coming future.
Lot of junk conent may not be useful in coming days.
