No backlink is the same. Consider a few points when asking for a backlink:

1. Which PR does the site have on which I get the backlink
2. Does the site with a link to your site has the same subject?
3. Is the backlink indexed by google?
4. How much links does the site which you get the backlink from has? So, in other words, how important is your link?

And even when you know this, you can't be sure. Nobody knows how the PageRank is exactly built up. We can only guess and see the results ;).

You can have few backlinks and get a positive result.

Get your site navigation structure right (inbound links)
Get some outbound links from other sites (preferably your niche) to point to yours

I agree, get a few high pr links, pr6 up. best links are .edu - google loves them, its very hard(or even impossible ! ) to find free ones, usualy have to pay the "rent" for them -starts with 50$ a month, but huge effect !

Good Luck !

I agree, get more and more backlinks and wait for the results you want.

Well, don't go for quantity and focus on quality because always quality matters a lot and not quantity.

Single high quality link better than 10 normal links.

So always focus on getting links from older, higher PR, authority and relevant websites.

Try to get One Way links as they are most valuable than any other like reciprocal or three-way link...

It's not the quantity of backlinks that counts more but it is the quality of backlinks that you have.

x3mario is right; it's quality and relevant back links not quantity.
