Currently my images are named 287286-1.jpg. Should I change that so all my images are the same as the title of my pages? Also, should I set the image alt text to the brief summary of my website's articles? Would this help my SE placement?

Thanks

The alt attribute stands for alternate, meaning it should describe the image. The renaming might help your images get index in Google's image search. I'm not sure if it would help your SE placement. Also this probably should of been posted in the SEO forum. Them folks down there don't surface much up here :P and they're the ones that are going to give you the best answer.

yes you should.

if you have an image of a duck, it should be called duck, not 5675.jpg

get into the habit of writing appropriate filenames for all of your digital content..(webpages, images, pdfs etc)

Yes you should, all of my images are tagged with keywords sperated by _ not spaces. I also provide a <alt> and <title> for each image. I think this helps with yahoo's rankings. They focus with onsite optimization in their algo. If anything, it can not hurt.

alt tags help but very little downplayed by the googe for over spamming back in the day. the following are the most important places for your keywords:

Domain names
file and folder names
Title tags
H1 H2 etc...
bold
italic
lists
