There is no specific limit but search engines will stop reading at a certain point. It should be noted that most modern search engines do not use the meta keywords tag.

there is limit to put meta keywords on your site, you can put no of keyphrases on your page.

But on meta description not repeat one keyphrase more than 5 to 6.
On meta title you can repeat 2 to 4 time.

As many as you want, Google completely ignores them anyway.

Keywords are ignored to a great degree due to the amout of spam that they generated. In theory, keywords were ideal for webmasters to tell spiders what the content of the page was about.

As always, spammers took over and totally devalued the idea to such an extent that google completely ignores keyword metadata if it is accurate, and may actually penalize you for keyword stuffing if you have loads of keywords in the meta data that do not appear in the page.

Google ignores keywords for positive SERPS ranking - but using keywords will also indicate a webmasters intentions and therefore spamming them or keyword stuffing would bring negative attention from google and your site ranking would suffer accordingly.

If you do use keywords then my advice is simple:
1) Only use relevant keywords for content that appears in a page
2) Each page should contain unique keyword data - this means some keywords can crossover when they appear on multiple pages but the whole keyword structure shouldn't be repetitive.

In my experience it is best to use no more the 6 keywords in your meta tags and no more then 3 in your description and title. Targeting more then 3 keywords on a page is a bad idea IMO, the internet is far to competitive there's people out there focusing on one main keyword or phrase and giving it there all. The more you target the more watered down the page gets and the harder it is to reach your goal.

Hi James,
Keywords in meta tag are of no more importance, if you use them blindly you may get banned for keywords stuffing, so try to use keywords which are targeted and relevant to your page for your meta tag.

I would suggest you to have your keywords wisely placed in your content which should appear naturally.

A site wouldn't get banned for keyword stuffing in the keywords meta tag.
To get banned you have to activly try to decieve a search engine, Not just practice bad SEO.
