Multiple Domain Names, 1 Website

Does Google or any other engine penalize for pointing more than one domain name to 1 website?

Im getting conflicting info on this..

If the DNS entry is pointing to the site google may penalise you, If you use a 301 Permanent Redirect google wont penalise you.
Because where muulltiple DNS entries all pointing to the same page may be seen as dupplicate content, a 301 redirect willl be seen as "moved content".

But really, For branding purposes, It's a bad idea to use more than one domain name for the same site.
