Sorry Saxena, but that is a total myth. Without promotion, nobody will know about the website and nobody therefore will build links to it. The quality of the content is indeed important, but you still need a method of publicity. And the fastest one is...

Superbowl ads

...unless your timing sucks and you have to wait another 364 days to the next Superbowl, of course. But if that is a few coins over your budget, try radio advertising, print advertising or even PPC, as some in this thread have suggested.

A publicity stunt in Times Square could help...or you could try a publicity stunt where someone might notice.

Whatever you do, the fastest way to get traffic would probably be a combined online/offline offensive.

Well, one of the reasons for using the social bookmarking sites is exactly to let other people know of the contents on your websites and then they might add links to your web pages if they find the articles useful.

I also suggest social bookmarking. It really helps to drive more free traffic to your site. But be sure that you have an interesting story to be submitted on these sites so that visitors will get attracted to see your link..

Better yet, have somebody else submit your content on social bookmarking sites and make sure that you also submit content from other sites. Don't become a self-promoter at these sites, because people smell "marketing" and the folks at Digg and Reddit don't like marketing.

It also helps to place a bookmarking tool on your webpages to make it real easy for visitors to submit your content to social bookmarking sites. At the risk of being a self-promoter myself (moderatrors, please edit if I have stepped over the line here), my brother and I created a free social bookmarking tool you can add to the bottom of all your pages to help your visitors social bookmark them.

To have an effective promotion in social sites or social bookmarking sites, you have to create a good title and description/summary to get the attention of the readers and visit the link

To what Aira says, it helps also to have a large network of friends you can share with. In fact, I have noticed on some sites that people pay very close attention to what their friends are bookmarking, and there is often a domino effect. So, just like in the real world, the quality of your submission and your ability to get people to look at it, makes all the difference.
