I have split off an existing section of site and decided to create a new website that expands on that section. I want to move the old section to the new website.

For SEO purposes, is it better to leave the old section on the first site and then add links to the corresponding pages that point to the new site with a notification that the pages have moved? Or, is it better to do a 301 redirect to the corresponding pages? Would there be any negative consequences for redirecting from one domain to another domain?

just a quick note, your request would be a lot clearer if you gave a brief example..

eg..

http://www.mysite.com/dogs is now being redirected to madaboutdogs.com

you shouldn't make your customers click a link to be taken to a new page. there is no need for that, just redirect them.

it is better to 301 the old pages immediately. there shouldn't be any negative consequences presuming both the domains are 'clean'

once the old pages are no longer being indexed by the big players - Google, Yahoo, MSN.. you can delete them altogether.
Done.
