Some Google Questions For You...

I own and run http://www.nysportsboard.com - it's just a php forum and nothing else - aimed at discussion about NY area sports teams. I have the mod_rewrite hack installed to make the board more spider friendly.

Some questions...

After the latest backlink update, I noticed only 2 to my site:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=& ... sboard.com

A link from my profile on the Ny Giants.com message board, and from a thread from another sports message board called sportsforums.net.

So even when they do the backlink update, it may only pick up some of the links? Why did the link from the sportsforum pick up but none of my other threads there? I have the link as my signature on lultiple sites, and have posted it in discussions on numerous other boards. I also have direct text links set up at several other sites. Why did only these particular 2 backlinks register?

When I just search for Google for "nysportsboard" I get posts from Ozzu and other message boards with my sig or where I have mentioned the site. But it doesn't come back with all of the mentions out there - any idea why?

Also - how do the backlinks work? Does the actual text "NY Sports Board" or something work is it the actual <a href> to my site? If I had a jpg for example somewhere with no text but a link to the site, would that work?

So what else can I do to get noticed?

We are starting to gain some regular contributors which is good. it's kind of a dead time of year for sporrts talk until March Madness and the NFL draft before the start of the baseball season. But I wanted to do all I can to ensure good rankings when Google updates everything again.

I ask a lot of questions. Thanks for your insight.

A couple of things I forgot to mention when we were talking earlier. Prior to the last backlink update, you were showing zero backlinks and had a PR 0

I suspect Google is just starting to really find and get your site indexed and ranked. Things should start to improve for you after the next PR update and you get some PR to your site.

As for the rest of your questions, I'm as interested in the answers as you are.

Lots of questions ... :lol:

Google only shows a "sample" of the sites linking to you. Look at some of the other search engines for total links ...

Yahoo = 35
Google = 2
MSN = 150

The problem with discussion boards is that articles eventually get archived or the thread becomes inactive and does not get crawled anymore.

Backlinks have several parts that the search engines use...

The link is scored as a vote for your site (contributing to page rank). The link text is in effect added to your page (contributing to search rank).

With images the ALT text is used in place of link text.

Get your site mentioned anywhere and everywhere. This includes forums, blogs, directories, classifieds, sport sites, etc.

Each time your site is referenced is like an invitation to visit. This includes people as well as search engines.

Only Google knows the answer to this question :lol:

That has nothing to do with http://www.nysportsboard.com . He's already using 2.0.11

In lines with that, this has already been discussed most of this week in the general board and this quote from phpBB dispells the myth that phpBB is the issue here:

Quote:
Equally it's annoying to see some people posting the same old highlighting exploit claiming their 2.0.11 board was hacked via it. Again unless my team and indeed our other teams, heck large sections of our community, are all lying to me that vulnerability was fixed in 2.0.11. Sites running .11 and claiming (or thier hosts claiming) to have been attacked using it should take a close look at other applications they have installed. phpBB is not alone in being exploited, all the major boards can be if you don't update as new releases are made. Equally users should ensure the relevant highlighting fix is indeed present. Over the years we've dealt with thousands of users who say they've patched something (be it an exploit or bug) but upon examination we've discovered the problem code is still there. Equally hosts should look at their own systems. Are you running awstats if so have you updated? Do you regularly update your OS and particularly the kernel (if appropriate) as fixes are released? Are your users running old versions of other PHP/Perl/etc. software? Have you set appropriate permissions on key folders such as /tmp and /var/tmp? Is your webserver running with as few permissions as possible? Just because we overlooked something doesn't mean you should!

And Bigweb applied all the necessary patches a couple months ago. Just didn't upgrade the version because of the amount of custom mods done here. We are covered and monitor it.

1. I am not sure if you still have this mod. It looks like it is not there any more i get pages like yousite/forum1.php&sid=4744e0add57453a3b925f144dfd2ad99

It looks like you did not get rid of sessions issue.

2. In terms of SEO do the following 4 things:
- get rid of index.php
- get meta description and keywords
- make theme of each post your title
- make your title shorter

You can refer to my post here

3. In tems of increasing traffic and link popularity - exchange links and look for good directories to get listed in. You can start here

To be honest, a friend installed the mod_rewrite mod when I first loaded in the site so I'm not sure what he did with it.

I checked out the link you posted - good stuff in there - I will try everything mentioned.

Thanks for your help.
