traffic and keyword phrases?

G'day to Everyone,

How can I find out how much traffic my competitor's site receives? and
Should I optimize for the plural or singular form of my keyword phrases?

Well you can get some hint about the traffic/hits of your competitor's site through Alexa but i think you'll be having a hard time in getting the right information since it's not a reliable tool. (but at least you can have some basis for comparison)

With regards to your target KWs, i think it is much better to use the plural form coz it's just like you're targeting both forms (singular and plural)

With regards to KW tools, better use Google Suggest

I always take a look at my competitor's meta kw list. Then I run the Google suggest mentioned above by aira.

That's the best thing to do. Look first the competitors KW and know the number of searches. If the number of searches are too high then try to select the less competitive KW first to rank your site.
