Hi all,

Am I correct in that to find backlinks using Google you use
link: http://www.yoursite.com?

When I do that with my site it shows only 9 backlinks, if I do it like link:www.mysite.com (without the space), it show 17 backlinks, and when I do link: mysite.com (without the space and without the www) I get several hundred.

Why is this? Is this a canonicalization issue? When I go to my site and do the backlinks checker in the Google toolbar, it only shows the 17 links.

Thanks for any help!

Holly

I always wondered why link: or site: operators give different results using space or not using it - and still i don't know (prefer to use operators without space though).

Bigger number of links when you don't use "www" is no suprise - http://www.site.com is subdomain of site.com domain (you can have blog.site.com, forum.site.com which also are subdomains of site.com).

But for sure if you're looking for accurate results of backlinking use link: operator in Yahoo! rather than in Google which is not as accurate as Y!.

Google webmaster tool is the best option. Also you can search all the links in altavista.com. To increase inlink, directory submission, article distribution, link exchange, etc are useful.

When i check my competitors I use

http://www.smartpagerank.com/pagerank-b ... domain.com

which is from
http://www.smartpagerank.com/result.php ... domain.com

because it shows you the page rank of the listing page, however seems the PR isnt showing @ the mo.

Google [link:] command will not give you the exact amount of BLs nowadays, to check your total no. of BLs, Go to Yahoo Site Explorer or Signup with Google Webmaster Tools to check internal and external links for your site.

link:www.yoursite.com will show the sites linking to that particular domain. Don't be mistaken though, this could be a great way for finding new link partners. Somtimes it's good to do this with competing site's to see where they are getting links from.

nope. To find back links using Google, type link:www.yoursite.com
without http!
