Hi,

I have spent sometime learning and getting to grips with SEO and have been quite lucky to have achieved top 1-3 listings for the majority of products on our website.

Our current e-commerce software uses ASP and only has one variable in each product url - however we are looking at a new system which uses php and rather than call a product it seems to run a search, meaning that the url of each product or category has many variables in the url.

Current site: http://www.transair.co.uk/product4.asp? ... ct_ID=6615

New software: http://www.simplythankyou.co.uk/sty/det ... t+Baskets+

This is one area I am not sure about, will this have a major effect on our listings? My guess looking at it is that google will have problems with the new urls?

Google will not run after 2-3 variables in URL.. So, your current URL is good for Search engines, I think. Even, I have checked, it is indexed by Google.

So, No problem for your URL with Google.

Hi, thanks for the reply. So you think we would be best to stick with our current system? 50% of our orders come from the search engine rankings we have gained so losing them would be a big deal.

What? wont run after 2-3 variables? This was a joke to get some laughs right?

I have a dynamic .Php driven site (Over 3,100+ pages) with urls containing upwards to 5-7 variables & guess what?, some are in the first position for there long tail phrase. Now if google stopped after a max of 3 variables, they wouldn't be listed at all (Yet ALL are indexed).

I think you have variables confused with sub-pages. I have had pages that didn't index because they were 3-4 pages deep from the home page. The golden rule of thumb is to keep ALL your pages no more than 2 clicks from the home page in order have a smooth indexing experience. For me, I added a footer category/sub-category navigation so that sub-categories can be directly accessed by the engines Via the home page (Thus staying within 2 clicks).

The only pages Not indexed are the ones set at No-Follow or the ones I didn't publish.

Ok, so a few examples (NOT related to my site) to prove what i'm saying would be: Search Term "Webmaster Mafia Forums"

This one VERY long & #8 on page ONE of Google for the term
http://www.secreturbanexplorationninjam ... 26ab0939b7

This ones long & #9 on page ONE of Google
http://www.squirrelmafia.org/phpbb/prof ... e8882f84c0

This ones Super long & on page TWO of Google
http://radiomafia.mastertopforum.com/pr ... c50f92b536

Short Loaded Variable Url (Page 49 of google, but thats just bad seo for the Phrase not variable reflective)
http://aoe3.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/for ... ,0,10&st=0

Another Short Loaded Variable Url (Page 51 of google, Again, just bad seo for the Phrase not variable reflective)
http://www.realmofgaming.com/index.php? ... tion=&id=&

And finally Googles Own Urls filled with what 7-10 variables?
http://www.google.com/search?q=webmaste ... art=0&sa=N

You can basically do this with any search term, if you look through the URLs under the description you're going to find some rather LONG variable filled URLS in the SERP's, so saying after 2-3 Variables Google won't index is INCORRECT...

At any rate, Just make sure to use the 2 clicks from the home page theory & you'll be fine.

What does SEO have to do with scripting & coding? He's in the right forum, if he wasn't the Moderators would have moved the thread.

At any rate I have provided Urls that ARE in the Google index with 5 or more Variables in them (Thus supporting that Google does index extensive Variables) . I am curious myself if anyone has further research to prove either side.

Yes, & I posted examples that are in Google, if they were NOT indexable they wouldn't be listed. I provided links so you can see for yourself, what kind of research can you provide me to prove GOOGLE SERP's are WRONGLY showing more than 3 variables?
