Alexa really slow?

Hi everyone.
I just finished setting up my new site (link is in my signature). I was getting ready to start buying a few text links, but then I noticed that my script was taking incredably long to finish. I found out that it was slowing down when it tried to check the alexa ranking. I tried going to alexa.com, but the site was taking forever to load and it kept timing out.
I did a search on google and found another person saying that alexa seemed to have slowed down.
Does anyone know if alexa has speed issues like this often? If it slows down my script a lot, then I should probably stop it from checking the alexa rank.
