Yeah, plus Ask Jeeves recently bought the Excite network.

As I heard from slashdot.com, Microsoft offered Google $20 billion or something.

Let's hope Google has the guts to say NO!

Here's a couple articles about what's going on:
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industrie ... arch_x.htm
http://news.com.com/2009-1032_3-1020641.html

Well, I couldn't find that slashdot thread, but these tell about what's going on.

Google used to have anarticle on their site, but they must have taken it down, too.

Those articles are pretty old (pre-2004). I'm pretty sure that Google's answer was a 'no', b/c of the lack of new news.

Lycos -> Google -> alltheweb -> Google & Looksmart

Back in the old days Looksmart was seen as evil and rather naff. Looksmart search now days is really good especially for entertainment topics because its is powered by Zeal directory. Zeal directory is far better than DMOZ in every way (apart from giving your site a PR boost cos it has no PR on its internal pages!).

It started with this article:
http://www.pandia.com/sw-2004/08-yahoo.html

and then I went through and noticed all the same results between Altavista and Yahoo.

So Yahoo actually bought out Altavista and Alltheweb.

Interesting... two less search engines on the Net.
