I was just wondering if anyone on here has their own search engine or directory.

A friend was asking me about setting up a professional-style search engine. His idea is that he would be able to advertise his own software on the home page of the site, and within some of the search results, and he would make his money back in no time.

How would we go about it, and how much do you think the hosting charges would be? I'm scared of the bandwidth issue.

hi there, I reckon you have to ask HOW GOOD your friend's search engine is, before anything else.

If it is reallyreally good, it will be popular and you wont have to worry about bandwidth. money for the bandwidth too :-)

I decided to edit this
My directory is at http://www.buckroberts.com
I accept paid submissions and reciprocal links. It' really easy to get peoplr to link back to a directory. I make a small amount of revenue from sponsored advertisements. But I have only had one person pay a review fee to list his/her website. I would say I deffinately haven't lost money.

I have 4 web directorys.

One is a general web directory that also includes other things like games, free article content, free screensavers, etc. Hopefully this site will become quite a big web portal in years to come

The other ones are:

An affiliate programs directory, a web hosting directory and a freebies directory.
Affiliate Programs - lists over 2,000 affiliate programs
125+ Affiliate Networks - lists some of the best networks online

hello, john5269
it would be great if you don't pull up old threads.
let them die!
I spent the last 5-10 mins reading some old threads which contained self-promoting materials (spams) as well.

isnt it a waste of time? :-)

Actually I agree - I was just being polite and not saying it. :)

I don't think this thread is all that old. It is only about a month old.

I always have replied to threads that are inbetween now to a month old. I don't normally reply to any thread after unless I don't realise I'm doing it for some reason.

That's the problem with me sometimes. I get a bit carried away with replying to threads.

I have 2 directories that I just launched in the last 2 weeks. I've already made a little from them with free advertising. I will wait until they grow a little before I offer paid advertising.

I run a few

http://www.findhound.com and http://www.directorygeneral.com to name a couple.

I run at least 5 directories, some general, some niche.

I also have run a simple search engine, takes a hell of a lot of space!

Its Almost Pointless To Run A Seartch Engine.

For One, You Need Alot Of Advertising Just To Get Your Name Out.
For Two, This Is My 100th Post. :-)
