Is it true subdomains are treated as their own domain.

So if i had the forum http://www.mysite.com/forum

and then...

forum.mysite.com

All the links from the forum.mysite.com would count as backlinks for http://www.mysite.com, but if i used http://www.mysite.com/forum none of those links would be counted as a "heavy backlinks" ??

I was just at the SES conferences in Chicago and a big linking scheme has to do with 3 way linking. What many of the big SEO companies are doing is:

Subdomain.yourdomain.com links to http://www.yourlinkpartnersdomain.com which links to http://www.yourdomain.com

It looks like they are being treated as different domains from a linking standpoint.

For me subdomains are kinda old now. Yes they are treated as their own domain however the power of them has been lost due to the fact that search engines realised ages ago people were just setting up sub domains with pointless content for the sake of backlinks.

I have no solid evidence and its just my opinion - but links from subdomains for me are worth far less than a link from a real true domain.

This is just a guess, but if i was a google bot i would rank a top level domain higher than a subdomain,.
