Hi seo gurus,
If we change the domain name will the results for the previous domain name be affected. I will explain in more detail....

My previous site had good results but now i am planning to change the domain name. Will this affect the results. The content on the new website will remain the same. I wanted to know how to "transfer" my results over to the new site? I there some way i can redirect the spiders so that they know the domain has been changed?

thanx in advance

Best thing to do, even though you're not using your old domain name, keep it anyway, and then use a .htaccess with a 301 redirect to forward all requests from the old site to the new site.

Assuming all URLs following the domain name are going to be identical, this should work..

Code: [ Select ]
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.olddomain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.newdomain\.com/$1 [R=301,L]
  1. RewriteEngine On
  2. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.olddomain\.com$ [NC]
  3. RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.newdomain\.com/$1 [R=301,L]

This will tell search engines that every page it attempts to load on olddomain.com now exists on newdomain.com

If the search engine tries to load http://www.olddomain.com/somefile.html it will automatically be forwarded to http://www.newdomain.com/somefile.html :)

Just switch out olddomain.com with your existing domain name, and newdomain.com with the name of your new domain.
