Does sub domains help ?

I tried searching for this topic but I can't find any.

does subdomains (ie. forums.domainname.com) help in google rating of importance of website?

It really depends on the importance of the actual domain. The better the domain is doing in the rankings (PR wise also) the better the sub domain will do.

so it doesn't help in google relevance when users are key searching ?
when searching for destinations + travel

ie. destinations.travelwalk.net

I think it would help for the keywords being in the domain name.

I am not sure if would help more that having travel.com/destinations.html though.

I saw on another site that sub-domains are treateds as different sites than the main domain. Has anyone heard of this. If so then what is the point of having a sub-domain?

yes its a like a new domain to Google. Some people like my company use it well but many people use it to spam.

I tend to agree also. Instead of starting a new domain and having to get new IBL's you can just add to your current site. That way you have increased traffic, content, PR, etc...
