Who is the earliest Search Engine? Was the page rank concept working at that time?

The earliest ones I remember using were altavista, northern lights, and a couple of others. I always thought altavista was the best until Google came along. I wasn't aware of any Pagerank concept.

If you were curious all it takes is a simple search using the search engines that everyone talks about here (I'm starting to think that very few people actually know how to use them). In fact, I'm not even certain why Michael William even bothered to ask such a question here in the first place. And the quote Alan Walters copied was from the Wikipedia "History" section for Web Search Engine History. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_search_engine

In other words it's kind of a no-brainer. This question never needed to be asked.

As far as I know, the first one to attain the fame as the search engine is the Google. The one's before it was the Altavista.
