Help with 301 redirects?

Hi,
I've put this code in my .htaccess file to redirect one page to another but it is not working. Can anyone help me out with the correct code?

Redirect 301 /mattmdesign.com http://www.mattmdesign.com

I am guessing that it should be something along the lines of:

Redirect 301 / http://www.mattmdesign.com

heres what i use in my .htaccess file

Redirect permanent /links.html http://www.teens.iconrate.net/forum/links.php

make sure that it is put onto 1 line

also try this

Redirect permanent / http://www.mattmdesign.com
