It all depends the the competitiveness of the site and how much maintenance you have to do. Is there a lot of content/text to work with? Do I have to create more text or just edit. Do we need to go through the site and change link text, are there text links?

I do a lot of research for keywords, which also takes up a lot of time.

I don’t worry about key word density. I don’t even optimise many pages beyond the title tag.

I do however spend hours and hours getting link exchanges onto a homepage for non-profit sites. Directories and stuff for profit sites.

Johan007,
you are spending "hours and hours getting link exchanges", that's fair enough, up to you, but I think you should spend a wee bit of time torying to see wich keywords you should target. Link pop. for the sake of it, I don't see the point..

Each case is unique but links exchange is vital to getting any half decent competitive key word. I spend about 2 hours for small site and much more for a larger one. The large sites don’t have a few keywords especially if they are content driven sites with many articles on a the topic.

I find what I do works and have plenty of number one spots though not as many as I would like.

I spend abt 1 hour on each page. if the competition is stiff, I may spend more than an hr on a page.

I spend about 30 - 40 mins per page on clients sites and more for my own. Mylatest venture is taking days and days of research and learning as it is vital that it makes money really quickly. I believe there is no definitive answer to this one.
Spend as long as you have too i guess!
