Pinging doesn't index anything. It just tells you if you have a route to a host and/or if the host is alive. For example, if I want to see if my connection to the net is good and/or if ozzu.com is up and running I would run

queyosepa# ping ozzu.com
PING ozzu.com (207.44.153.102): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 207.44.153.102: icmp_seq=0 ttl=48 time=52.952 ms
64 bytes from 207.44.153.102: icmp_seq=1 ttl=48 time=53.152 ms
64 bytes from 207.44.153.102: icmp_seq=2 ttl=48 time=53.170 ms
^C
--- ozzu.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 52.952/53.091/53.170/0.099 ms

If i didn't get a response and wanted to check DNS, I might ping the IP instead.

queyosepa# ping 207.44.153.102
PING 207.44.153.102 (207.44.153.102): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 207.44.153.102: icmp_seq=0 ttl=48 time=52.725 ms
64 bytes from 207.44.153.102: icmp_seq=1 ttl=48 time=52.543 ms
64 bytes from 207.44.153.102: icmp_seq=2 ttl=48 time=52.548 ms
^C
--- 207.44.153.102 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 52.543/52.605/52.725/0.085 ms
