Newsletter: the best way to handle (un)subscribe requests?

Hello,

I have looked for the answer in the Internet, but failed to find one. Will appreciate if someone knowledgeable can share his/her wisdom.

There is a website with newsletter subscription available. The procedure is the following:

- A visitor enters his/her e-mail address on the subscription page and clicks the button.
- The page tells him/her that a confirmation e-mail has been sent to the address provided.
- A confirmation e-mail is, indeed, sent to the e-mail address and contains a link.
- The visitor clicks the link, gets to the page which tells him/her that subscription is successful and another e-mail is sent to him/her. This e-mail contains an "unsubscribe" link.
- If the visitor ever clicks the 'unsubscribe" link, he/she gets to the page which tells him/her that subscription has been canceled and another e-mail is sent - just a notification/confirmation.

The questions is whether the above scheme is optimal. Isn't that too many e-mails? What would be the best way to provide a quick (and intuitive, and fool-proof) way to handle both subscribe and unsubscribe requests?

Thank you.
