Imagine this, I have been making sites since 97, but I have never given alot of effort into learning search engine rankings. I was told by many of my fellow web folks in memphis that SEO was its own industry and not t o bother with trying tokeep up with all that info as well as keeping up with the latest coding standards. So thats what I did, I designed sites, relying on meta description/keywords and other than that refering them to someone that specialized in SEO. But now its 2005 (eep almost 2006) and I find my self needing to know how what and why of SEO. I have some info (about 5 links that I still havent pulled up/read) And I was wondering if I could get a nudge in a direction or if its too late, Im just an old man and have to deal with the consequences of not paying attention to search engine trends. Any advice/suggestions/etc will be greatly appreciated. One little question does it have any relavance if the keywords come before the description or does it just matter to have them regardless of the order.

Anyways, no the order does not matter, the content does. Though most of the people inc me, use Keywords first, just practive I guess.

The best advice I can give you is to do your research. There are hardly any classes out there for SEO, so it doesn't matter if your young or old. I woud recommend taking a few hours/days/weeks and going through all the threads here at OZZU and then asking more specific questions. We will help all we can.

There are google guidelines that you might want to read and also that Seo beginners guide seems decent for basics. That would be enough for general "white hat" type of SEO.
I think you might find that reading about SEO can get pretty addicting, even if you are not directly involved in the process.

I figured it out by trial and error. Separating fact SEO from fiction SEO can be time consuming. Look for scholar articles on how the engines rank sites. How the algorithms and filters work. Look under the hood.

For seo research, It is better to read from forums than from static webpages. Forums is always updated while static websites are not. It requires a lot of reading, research and patience to be a good search engine optimization specialist someday. You also need to apply what you have learned to your current website for you to see the changes month after month.

Well Im not really looking to be a SEO specialist, I would just like to be informed. That way I can at least do some basic things that will help with page ranking. And if they need more I may be able to provide that and if not maybe I can point them in the direction they need to go to get better page ranking.
