Wow, when I first read about be listed in many directories as being spam...that was a first.

Anyway, I agree, I add sites to tons of directories and I also pay for some depending on the amount. I tend to stick with the larger directories when their is a cost because you know they are legitamit and will be around for the long haul.

The main ones being:
MSN Business Directory
Yahoo Directory
Business.com (B2B clients)
DIR777 (Expensive, but some PR6 and 7 links)

I think you have got mixed up here some how!

Adding your link to free to submit directories has more advantages than exchanging links with sites.

Exchanging links with sites is more likely to be known as spamming than submitting your site to directories.

Directories are a very good way of improving your sites PR and also getting some good back links where you don't even have to return the favour by linking back to them.

I also have a list of web directories in an Excel spreadsheet.

I only have just over 600 of them though and quite a few of them are either rubbish or you have to pay to get listed.

I have paid to get listed in a few, but now I'd rather just try to get my site listed within them for free or just by exchanging links with them.

I agree with Jess, the more directory submissions you can get the better.

Particularly if they don't require a recip link.

I would love to see Jess's list of 1,000's of directories any chance of a mailing it over?

I run a few freebies myself:-
