Hi,

do not submit to too many directories, it would be considered as a spam to google. Personal opinion, submit both. But LInk exchange is more important, as you need as many backlinks as possible to help in page rank.

lol - thats a new one to me.
links from directories are not classed as spam. I have got sites to top of engines purely from directory links.

Personally I submit new sites to thousands of directories by hand every month - never been penalised for it.

They are an excellent source of backlinks.

Theres heaps of directory lists out there -

Every time i come accross a new directory i add it to my own list - (excel sheet)

I pay for listings if the site I am submitting is commercial as it is an excellent investment - a few bucks for a lifetime link.
The benefit that come from some of the paid directories is amazing - and if you think of the R.O.I on a lifetime $40 link - well that link has to send one customer and it has paid for itself.......

submitting to directories work well. It also depends on how competitive your site is. for sites that are highly competitive, directories can a fair distance..

Everyones entitled to their opinion. But theres a reason some sites charge where other don't.

The difference between the big players and the tag alongs.

in any case, its not spam. I have heard of that one before. :-)

there are lots of myths about and it was confusing at first. but slowly, you will filter out the myths/untruths as you gain more experience in this

about the paid submissions, I am on the same side as Jess.- I pay for some directories. yeah man!

Wow, when I first read about be listed in many directories as being spam...that was a first.

Anyway, I agree, I add sites to tons of directories and I also pay for some depending on the amount. I tend to stick with the larger directories when their is a cost because you know they are legitamit and will be around for the long haul.

The main ones being:
MSN Business Directory
Yahoo Directory
Business.com (B2B clients)
DIR777 (Expensive, but some PR6 and 7 links)

I think you have got mixed up here some how!

Adding your link to free to submit directories has more advantages than exchanging links with sites.

Exchanging links with sites is more likely to be known as spamming than submitting your site to directories.

Directories are a very good way of improving your sites PR and also getting some good back links where you don't even have to return the favour by linking back to them.

I also have a list of web directories in an Excel spreadsheet.

I only have just over 600 of them though and quite a few of them are either rubbish or you have to pay to get listed.

I have paid to get listed in a few, but now I'd rather just try to get my site listed within them for free or just by exchanging links with them.

I agree with Jess, the more directory submissions you can get the better.

Particularly if they don't require a recip link.

I would love to see Jess's list of 1,000's of directories any chance of a mailing it over?

I run a few freebies myself:-
