Post 3+ Months Ago

Hey all, this is my first post so go easy on me ;).

I have been running a website for about a month. In a nutshell, it is an open directory for a particular sport.

Now, the website itself isn't designed perfectly but that is another topic, another day. Today my concerns are that I am doing everything I can to drive in the users, and become indexed by the search engines.

Currently the site receives roughly 60-70 uniques per day. I have about 10 link-backs to me from other related sites, including the largest MMA site (sherdog.com) currently on the net. Sherdog alone gives me about 15 per day, they also have a high PR which I think is a 7 or an 8.

Here is what I have been doing:

Modified the site title.
Added Meta keywords, descriptions, and all other info.
Vigorously emailing with other webmasters for recipricals.
Joined two sport-related banner exchanges.
Submitted my link to sport-related directories and link sections.
Added a few content-heavy articles.
Submitted to some of the major search engines.
Submitted to dmoz. (our sport's editor is painfully slow so this looks grim)
Submitted to a few other PR high directories thanks to a link from this forum.
Using Google Adwords for $2/day. This evens out as that is what Adsense brings in currently.
Added robots.txt

Here is my current bot crawling data for the past few days:
--------------------------------------------
MSNBot 46+8
Inktomi Slurp 14+3
Unknown robot (identified by 'crawl') 10+3
Unknown robot (identified by hit on 'robots.txt') 0+5
Unknown robot (identified by 'robot') 3+1

So obviously I am getting some SE bots coming through but no google :(.

Anything else I can do to help optimize?

Thanks for any help guys,
Paul

Welcome pbradish :)
Just continously build your inbound links. getting a good rank takes at least 3 months depending on your targeted keyword.
So be patient..

Thanks Alpha,

Just had my first 100+ unique user days yesterday.. :)

I will keep hunting down sites for inbound links, and see where it takes me.

Thanks again,

you didn't mention, so I wondered how you had chosen the keywords you're targeting?

As you may know, some of them are too competitive for a new site.

bbcarter,

I chose most of my keywords by looking through 'competitor' keywords.

Now that I think of it, they are pretty generalized and are probably way too competitive.

Here's the actual list I am using:

<meta name="keywords" content="Mixed Martial Arts links, MMA Links, MMA, Mixed Martial Arts, Full Contact Fighter, cage fighting, MMA schools, Bas Rutten, Sherdog, MMA.tv, Groundnpound, MMA forums, MMA directory, MMA links, NHB, No Holds Barred, UFC, Pride, Rings, Shooto, MMA shopping, MMA clothing, MMA fighters">

Any suggestions/ideas?

Thanks,

my pages average around 50k in size. biggest problem i have is bandwidth usage im flowing 36gigs a month. ouch ... i shaved off 4 gigs optimizing my pages will have to redesign the whole site to reduce the pages to 30k each... make sure you block all image, ZIP, PDF, ect using your robot.txt file will help reduce bandwidth...

You can use WEB CEO tools to optimize your website and it's free.

using other tools to optimized your web page is not a good idea I think.
Manual optimization is still the best. Perhaps you may use the webseo tool as a guide for meta tags and for analyzing web logs only.

link exchange may help you from building your inbound links.

I'm on two of them. One seems to work much, much better than the other. I may just dump the 2nd one.

.. although, even if they don't click through the 2nd link exchange much, it does get the website's name out there. In such a niche sport, wouldn't that still be a good thing?

OK I dropped the link exchange that wasn't producing, and kept the one that has been doing very well.

Now the site is a bit less cluttered.

I also changed my Adsense placement per Google's recommended hotspots from this link:

You ve done good in your in page optimization.. :)
Now just focus in your IBL (inbound link)...

The more good links that point to you the better ..
Always have a fresh content , bots lave that especially Googlebot..

Thanks,

Since it's an open directory the inbound links have been pretty easy to come by. I have it set up so an inbound isn't required by the webmasters who list their site, but if they do link back their listing is bolded and bumped to the top of the page/category. This seems to be helping.

The one thing that I am worried about though is that the directory software is dynamic. I'm hoping all the categories become listed in search engines but am assuming that SE's won't like the site very much.

Anyone know how I can convert these from dynamic to static?
