This thread is really helpful for me to understand the 2 'colors' of SEO. Thanks for the thread starter.

but there is a thing as gray hat, a combination of black and white hat techniques, there is also blue hat that features advanced SEO techniques like Keyword fluffing which targets your long-tailed keywords and putting search function in your site/blog

Black hat SEO means manipulating SERPS, just concentrating on getting visitors and pagerank - so it could be argued that any promotion done by anyone connected with that site, posting links, exchanging links, keyword research its all black hat SEO, because white hat SEO means just making new content and letting it be found and linked to naturally - as extreme as this may sound its the facts, so nobody can really be pure white hat

If you exchange links with someone then you are doing it because you want link popularity to exploit search engine results so its black hat seo. Of course we never think of it in this way,

Massive link exchange causes link farms which is a form of spamming...that's bad...

White hat Seo:
1.Proper keyword density
2.Links not from Link firms.
3.No keyword stuffing

White hat SEO is the practice of doing techniques that are acceptable by search engines. Doing Blackhat SEO leads to penalties.
