how can you tell which of your search results have been paid to be put there and which ones are appearing by chance?

Uh oh...another jess..jk

Usually you can tell by looking at the sponsored results section for each engine. They are almost always marked by "Sponsored Results".

MSN & Yahoo - Very top, very bottom, and right side. Overture Sponsored Listings. Yahoo also has pay-for-inclusion listings within it's search results. Those are a little harder to find.

Google - Top and right side. Google Adwords Sponsored Listings.

All the free listings are there because of optimization to the site.

Any other questions?
