I have heard that larger companies pay Search Engines like Google or Yahoo to be put on the top of certain Keyword lists. Is this true?

The other thing I have heard is that the more official links that are found on your page give you a better chance of being found through a search engine. Is this true?

Thank you.

It must be adwords. There is absolutely no way of altering your natural search results through paying Google :(

The big dogs out there are making pay per click advertising very expensive. Ya guys are correct, they pay google, overture, etc lots of money to get top listing. Small guys like us will not be able to match them. Most smaller companies are now looking for alternatives like going to PPC companies for listing like searchfeed.com, babadorie.com, search7 and more.

My company pays in the range of $40- $50 per click for some keywords and we don't even have the top spot.
