Love your use of type, try some diffrent type face's okay, the times new roman is abit dull. There a plenty of fonts you can find that will express the message you are trying to get get across. Have you used illustrator?

The first one can use Improvement in the eyes, i found a cool tutorial with Photoshop since you mentioned you used it...

You may also want to mess around with blending modes to make some of your effects more realistic. Also you may want to search google for some interesting brushes.
