Oops, I erased a 1GB Lexar 40X CF card with live images, no backup. Erase was done by format in the camera, a Canon 10D. Any ideas how to recover the files, if possible? Thanks for any replies.

You can use any data recovery software,I used Windows data recovery software for this,
Data recovery software for Windows supports both NTFS FAT file system to recover and restore all erased files and folders from disk partition of crashed hard drive. The software helps you in regaining all your deleted, formatted, lost data from Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 server Windows XP and Windows Vista operating system.

Sorry luke, but there is no way you'll be able to get those images back. If you formated the card by using the camera which i believe you did then you can say goodbye to them.

Hmmmm, according to the folk at Active@ UNDELETE, there is a good chance that files saved to a flash card CAN be restored.

Quote:
Undelete files on removable devices (SmartMedia, Secure Digital, MemoryStick, etc.)

I've never used their product since I've been fortunate enough to have never accidentally wiped a card *taps head*, but it LOOKS promising.

Good luck, eh :-]

I accidentally formatted my SONY 12x HandyCam with the images/videos still on it. So I downloaded "Data Doctor Recovery Memory Card" and it restored all my files.

You can try a CF card recovery freeware named iCare Data Recovery Free that I have tried to recover my data after accidental deletion. It is really free and efficient.
In you case, you could select the “Advanced Files Recovery” option from four options and preview them after recovering.

Note for you:
1. Do not store any new data on this card to avoid the original data overwritten by new data, which can make it gone forever.
2. Do not save the recovered data on the same card in case of recovery failure.
3. Do not forget to back up your important data well before you try to erase data in the future.

Just try to use a data recovery tool to get back lost files.
And do not add any more file into your card. Or your data would be overwritten.

you should try to format the card in Dos prompt, once. If you are unable to format it in Dos prompt also then consult a technician who has experience handling this types of electronic gadgets.

Another note. Usually, a card gets corrupt when it is taken out of the camera while the camera is still on, being accessed or in use. It can also go corrupt if you take it out of your card reader without selecting "remove safely" on windows OR "ejecting" with a mac. So be sure the little green light on the back of the camera is not glowing and that your wife turns the camera off prior to taking the card out. I would like to suggest you using which is quite easy to use and recovers your precious photos and videos from memory cards,Flash drives, digital cameras. The software has a free trial version which will show you the recoverable photos on preview if you find your photos on preview then go for the download otherwise not..

there are many data recovery tool, some are paid, some are free,
like: iStonsoft data recovery tool

like: Vibosoft card data recovery

like iPubsoft data recvoery Pro

like: Coolmuster data recovery

and more...

I tested them, all of them works well, but it is a pity that they are not free.
