The USS Peleliu, a US amphibious assault ship, docked in my home town of Sydney the other day, and I thought I'd go have a look-see ... and of course along came my camera, Joseph.

I'd arranged to meet with another photographer from deviantART, but I ended up getting into the city really late ... anyway, that's not important, and neither is the fact that a seagull almost stole my Macdonalds apple pie while it was in my hand ... no picture of that, unfortunately.

Anyway, this was yesterday, and this other photographer and I rocked up to the ship with our camera gear and didn't have too high hopes of getting on board ... and as expected the guys said "invite only" in that crazy American accent.

We took some photos, and we took off. In the city we happened to spot some marines - not hard to pick them out of the crowd ... so we got chatting. Quite soon Jim, one of the marines, was on the phone to see if he could escort us aboard. Score!

So this morning I rolled out of bed at some ungodly hour and trekked into town. At 7:50 Jim comes through the gates and takes us through (smirking at the guards is quite fun) and in and up the ladder into this giant tin can.

Anyway, won't bore you with too much detail ... there were plenty of helies on there: 4 x AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters, 12 x CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters, 9 x CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters, 4 x UH-1N Huey helicopters; and then there were the orgasmic AV-8B Harrier attack planes, 6 of them :D

Here are some of the photos I took.

Depending on the base or area that they dock, on Sundays most of these ships have a open house to the public. They are great photo's.

Most of them have been in the past ... ah well, I got on it anyway :) I think it was better than an open day - for starterswe were the only civilians on the ship for most of the time ... a few came aboard later, they were the families, I should think - and that means no crowds and six harrier jets to ourselves :D

A few more pictures ... inside a CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter:

This one's too long to fit here - a pano of the whole ship.
