I have tried to load the bigwebmaster guestbook onto my server but all I get is this

http://www.urbanjellyfish.newmail.ru/guestbook/admin.cgi

Loads of script.

Is it anything to do with the chmod becasue whenever I try to cahnge it I get the message '500 SITE chmod unknown' back from the host server

Your chmod is definately wrong. I can tell from just looking at that page it's set to Read only. I've never downloaded or looked at Bigwebmaster's guestbook script, but I can guarantee you your permissions are wrong.

I'm not sure what permissions you need or how you're trying to change them, but my guess would be at least chmod 755

Owner: Read Write Execute
Group: Read Execute
Other: Read Execute

I'm sure bigwebmaster can tell you, but I would imagine that the install instructions tell you what they should be.

Thanks for you quick reply. If I open that script in notpad, can I change it there and then without having to reply on the ftp programme.

What I mean is change the script, save it and reload it back onto the webserver?

What is your host server? Windows 2000, Linux? Other?

You can't chmod on a Windows server. You have to set permissions in a control panel your host should provide. Linux/Unix servers should do the chmod via ftp instantly.

I am hosting it on Russian server and I think it is Apache.

Trouble is, my Russian is crap so the web page is a bit of a mystery to me.

The reason I am using this server is because it is fast, 20mb free space, and no adverts!

Well, if it's apache, it's probably a linux server. When you chmod in ftp, do you see the revisions next time you look? i.e. are they the correct changes you made? It doesn't look like it per the link you provided. That link shows the actual script which tells me your permissions are read only.

Either chmod 444 or chmod 744 most likely

hmmm, just changed it to 444 and the server reports back

257 "/"
CWD guestbook
250 Changed to /guestbook
New connection OK. Reissuing command.
site chmod 666 /guestbook/guestbook.dat
500 SITE chmod unknown

and does not change it! very strange indeed!

I see. You don't have authority to change permissions on your host via FTP -- you need to talk to the host or find a new one.
