Access denied for MySQL

Im trying to conect to my local copy of MySQL now ive set up a username "neil" for me and a password in the mysql controal pnall but when I try to conect to it I get this error

along with the die statement
I tried using the root with no password and this gets rid of the error but I still the the die. I am new to mysql but have used it a bit in the past and its always worked. I am using a new copy of xampp could that be it. Any ideas on how to fix this as I have viery little to do with the project untill I can get this working.

Double-check your user/pass against what you're passing via code. Acess Denied error is pretty straightforward - either the info is being passed incorrectly or the user hasn't been set up properly.
I'd love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.
