Use a real database, any SQL flavor. If you can avoid MS SQL Server, do it as Micro$oft software is the most insecure ever known.

From VB you can connect to MySQL server without problem.

If you are not planning to use a database server, well, there is not a really secure solution to Access. You may encrypt/decrypt the file, but you have to make it accessible to the application. So that is not a real solution.

Take in count you can connect to SQL servers using ODBC, which makes it easy in some way. If you used ODBC to connect to access you won't need to change all your code to port it to other DB.
