The Computer Language Benchmarks Game is a collection of 1368 programs, consisting of 19 benchmark reimplemented across 72 programming languages. It is a fantastic resource if you are trying to compare programming languages quantitatively. Which, oddly, very few people seems to be interested in doing.

Although I agree in the comparison of languages in terms of speed and resources consumption, having worked and enterprise scale applications and the resources that come into organisations I would also like to make not of a few things

1) Often performance will be sacrificed for managability
2) Proper planning and system resource allocation can often over come performance issues
3) Data structures are imperative in data orientated applications. Bad data structures lead to performance leaks in the database, bad indexing and response times from the sql/database platform.
4) Planning is key in the success of any application.

Very interesting read though ATNO, thanks :)
