I assume you are using CSS.

For layers, look at z-index: http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_positioning.asp

For toggling the display of elements, check out visibility: http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_classification.asp

View this site on IE (it will not work or give you the necessary info on mozilla browsers):

http://www.htmlguru.com/

Click the HTML GURU link in the "updates" section to view the archived copy of the site.

After the page loads click the tutorials link. Click the "Overiew" graphic to get to the tutorials.

I'm not certain you'll find a better DHTML page or tutorials on the internet...at least, to date, I haven't found any better. I can't wait to see what he does with his revise.

DHTML is basically the combination of CSS and JavaScript. Without CSS, DHTML layers are not possible. You should definitely learn CSS if you want to do DHTML.

Yeah, that's the link I was talking about...but it only works in IE...if you click it using a mozilla based browser you get a "coming soon " sorta message.
