I'm creating a new website for my band, and I was planning on creating a forum. Unfortunately, I have a few problems. I'd like to use javascript, but I'm not even sure if thats the best tool. I dont know the language, and I was hoping someone might be able to either point me to some free javascript, or some other source. I've seen it suggested that I ask my web host about a forum, but I have absalutely no idea who my host is. The old administrator just gave me his username and password. Is there an easy way to find out? And I've noticed several forums with the same format as this one. One of the source codes had a link to http://subblue.com/ is this the company that created the source for this forum? And if so, how much did it cost? Any help would really be appreciated.

There will be NO forums using Javascript, it is just impossible.

This forum uses PHP and is located for free at http://www.phpbb.com .

You'll have to figure out if your host allow PHP and a mySql database. I suppose someone might be able to trace your URL back to an ISP

so can anyone trace my server? http://www.ferndaleband.org
Using a traceroute program, one of the locations was http://unknown.level3.net/ , but this doesnt seem to be a hosting service of any kind.

The domain is hosted here:

That's where your site is hosted.

Since it's public record anyway you can go to nic.net, click the whois link and type in your domain name, and you get all the relevent info about who owns the site. At the bottom are the two name servers being used.

And AMERICANDISCOUNT-WEBHOSTING.COM owns the name servers, so that's where you are hosted.

If you can't log in, with what you have, you need to call their tech support or customer service, explain what's up and work out the details. While you're on the phone with them, you should ask about what the service plan you are on supports. As b_heyer explained earlier, to use this forum the plan needs to support PHP and a mySQL database.

Using it is pretty easy, so don't let what you don't know stop you. If they don't support that with you're plan, there are other alternatives, but javascript is not one of them.

OK -- that's one step out of the way. You'll have to call them and ask, as I stated above to find out if it supports phpBB. Read the system requirements at the link b_heyer gave you and then call and ask.
