Free Java Compiler and Tutorial

Can somone point me in the direction of a good free Java Compiler and a Tutorial. I know a little bit of C++ and from what I've heard, Java is similiar. Also, I heard there was some way you can add a GUI to your Java programs really easily, can someone point me there also?

Sun's Java tutorial is a good place to start once you've downloaded the SDK. It is arranged into "trails" that cover getting started and creating GUI's with JFC/Swing as well as essential classes and such.

There are also a great number of free java resources available on the web including free java books, tutorials, IDE's, faqs, forums, mock exams for certification etc. I've got some of them linked from my website:
