But I'm learning quickly. I've been using a variety of sources. One that I found helpful was this one:
http://www.phpcomplete.com/tutorials.php

I've also been studying the php manual:
http://us2.php.net/manual/en/

and the mySQL manual:
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/index.html

That plus an indepth analysis of how this forum board script is set up has helped tremendously. I don't know if that's the best way to start, but it's sure helping me.

If you're already familiar with programming and want to learn php then there is a complete book freely available in the form of sample chapters in pdf files. The book is A Programmer's Introduction to PHP 4.0 and all the chapters can be viewed online if your browser has the adobe plug-in or you can download them and read them offline. You can't print them however.

To quote the publisher:

The book begins with a rapid introduction to PHP's syntax and basic functionality, allowing readers to easily gain a general understanding of the language. The book then moves onto advanced issues like PHP's role in database manipulation, sessions and user-interactivity.
